The Full Story
“Homecoming: Rerooting the Black Body in Nature” is an explorative and immersive website that features a compilation of narrative nonfiction essays, photography, and voice recordings.
By interweaving the many stories of my family history with historical and cultural analysis, I examine the complex relationship between Black Americans and nature and how the current attitudes towards nature collectively came to be that of indifference if not rejection. I wanted to understand how the Black body came to be removed from not only the earth, but from the history and stories that shaped us culturally.
While the distinction in cultural differences cannot be understated between Black Americans of the North and the South, the predominant association of the Black American with urbanism as synonymous must be examined for its historical and cultural roots. With this erasure of the
